Sagar (Saugor) is a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The city is around 180 km (110 mi) northeast of state capital, Bhopal. Its original name ‘Saugor’ is an amalgamation of two words: Sau meaning 100 and Garh meaning forts; there were countless small-forts in this region. With time the name has changed from Saugor to Sagar.

The ancient Indian kingdom of Chedi had its capital at Suktimati, which is located in Sagar in contemporary times. The history of Sagar District before 1022 A.D. is generally unknown; after that, records are available. Sagar was under the rule of Ahir Rajas and their capital was at Garhpehra. In 1660, Udenshah founded the present town of Sagar.

Tourist places to visit in Sagar, MP

1) Rahatgarh Waterfalls– This 50 feet waterfall is situated near the Rahangarh fort.  Peoples come here to make picnic and some other entertainments.

2) Rahatgarh Fort-It is situated about 40 km west from Sagar on Bhopal Sagar Road. This place is famous for its battlement ramparts, its gates and its ruins of palaces temples and mosques. It is situated on the steep bank of the Bina River which is crossed at this point by a fine bridge of fourteen arches.

3) Lakha Banjara Lake- This is beautifully adorable lake surrounded with natural beauty. According to tradition, it is believed that this lake was constructed by one Lakha Banjara in the 11th century, so it is also named as Lakha Banjara Lake. This lake is one of the most visit tourist places around Sagar.

4) Eran- The gate of Bundelkhand on one side and Malwa at the other side. The name of this place is derived from the abundant growth of ERAKA, a sort of grass of emollient and diligent properties. The village of Eran has a most prestigious collection of archaeological relics.

5) Khimlasa Forts– This is the ancient fort and revealing the glorious past of the various dynasties. The fort walls are built of rubble. This fort was built in the 17th century A.D. Khimlasa is said to have been founded by a Mohammedan noble.

6) Varun Smriti Udhyaan– There is a new tourist attraction in Sagar – Varun Smriti Udhyaan. It is situated 12 km off Jabalpur Road and is an exotic resort. It provides a state of art water park, outdoor activities like picnics, outdoor sports facility for children, great landscape with a few very rare varieties of flowers and fruits.

How to reach Sagar

Air: nearest Domestic Airport is Dumna Airport, Jabalpur or Bhopal airport both are equally distant at 200 km, roughly four hour drive from Sagar.

Rail: Sagar itself has a Railway Station, having good connectivity with the major cities of Madhya Pradesh. It is well connected to the cities such as Delhi, Gwalior, Agra.

Road: Sagar lies on the Kanpur -Bhopal Road route via NH-934. The place is well connected with Jabalpur, Jhansi, Bhopal with other major nearby cities.
