The famous Great Sanchi Stupa, a UNESCO world heritage site situated on top of a hill in Sanchi town. Great Emperor Ashoka build this Stupa almost 2300 years ago over the relics of Gautam Buddha. You can say it is the oldest living structure in India. Lets see how you can reach Sanchi Stupa from Vidisha or Bhopal, two nearest rail heads.
Sanchi is a small village near by Vidisha and just 45 Km away from Bhopal, Capital city of Madhya Pradesh.
Air: Bhopal is main airport at a distance of 46 Km from Sanchi where from there you can hire taxi.
Bus: There is good connectivity of Buses from Bhopal.
train :Vidisha is on main route from Delhi to Bhopal, mostly all trains stop here. And Sanchi stupa to Vidisha junction is just at a distance of 10 Km. Auto Rickshaw is readily available at Vidisha junction for Sanchi Stupa. Though Sanchi itself have a railway station but only few train have stoppage there.
Site have three main Stupa , great toran (Gate ways) in all four direction on which depict the life of Ashoka and teaching of Buddha.
Remains of Pillar of Ashoka: There are many Ashoka pillar across the India, on which instruction of Askoka use to inscribed.
Remains of old temples of Gupta period in the same campus.
ASI museum and Cottage of John Marshall, which is closer to the main site of Sanchi.
Entry charges at Sanchi stupa is Rs. 40/- for visitors that include entry charge of Sanchi Museum.
On Sanchi trip you can also explore site of Udayagiri caves, famous for its rock shelters and cave temples mainly dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. Site is at a distance of 4 km from Vidisha, and u can take a cab or auto from Vidisha to reach Sanchi via Udaygiri cave.
