Historical name of Ratlam city was Ratnapuri or gem-city, lie in Madhya Pradesh. The city is famous for Gold, Ratlami Sev, Ratlami Saree. Apart from these, few Dams and temples are among major tourist attraction of Ratlam.
It is said that Ratan Singh Rathor got the city of Ratlam, as a gift from Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Once, Shah Jahan had organised an event of elephant fights, and invited all the clans of Rajputana.
Ratan Singh was also invited from the Rathore clan. Unfortunately, during the event one of the elephants gone wild and headed towards Shah Jahan possibly to attack.
No one from the crowd shown courage to stop the elephant. Everyone got afraid and fled from the event. Whereas Ratan Singh swiftly mounted over the elephant and stabbed the elephant head with his katar.
Shah Jahan got highly impressed from Ratan Singh and gave him the entire state of Ratlam, proclaiming him as the king.
Kedareshwar Temple-The Kedareshwar Temple is another Shiva temple situated in the Sailana Village of Ratlam District. This temple is located at a distance of 4 km from the Sailana Palace and is situated in a man-made cave. This man-made cave has been carved out of a cliff of igneous rocks, whose top has a small stream of water during the monsoons, that flows down from there, to join a small pond of the nearby valley. The place is most visited during the monsoon season. The area around this temple is also a popular picnic spot in the place. Bilpakeshwara temple about 18 km from Ratlam where Lord Shiva is the main deity, looks brilliant with its Pachayatana style.
Cactus Gardan -Situated in the Sailana Palace in the town of Ratlam, It is one of the most famous and popular sightseeing attraction among tourists. It is a relatively new garden which was established around 50 years back in the premises of Sailana garden which is roughly 200 year old now.
Dholawad dam- Also known as the Saroj Sarovar Dam, is a major tourist attraction and is a must visit place in Ratlam. It is located in Raoti which is at a distance of 25 km on the west of Ratlam. The scenic views that one gets near the dam are simply breathtaking. People love to watch the sunset and enjoy the cool breeze and serene atmosphere.
The Kharmour Bird Sanctuary, also known as Sailana Bird Sanctuary, is situated in the Sailana Village of the Ratlam District. This sanctuary is spread in a total area of 13 sq km and was established in 1983. This sanctuary is home to and is named after the ‘Kharmour’ bird, a very rare species; and it is also a major stop for a wide variety of migratory birds.
Shri Nageshwar Parshwanath Tirth This Temple is a Shwetambar Jain Temple dedicated to Parshvanatha, the 23rd tirthankar of Jainism. This temple is considered very miraculous. Moolnayak of this temple is a green colored Parshwanath with hood of 7 cobra. This 13½ feet idol is carved from a single emerald stone.
Bibrod Tirth is a 13th-century Temple. This temple is dedicated to Adinath, the 1st tirthankar of Jainism. Moolnayak is a 2.5 ft black-colored idol of Bhagawan Adinath in the Padmansana posture. The inscription on his idol belongs to a period earlier than even the thirteenth century.
Rail– Ratlam Junction is a major junction on Delhi-Mumbai and Ajmer-Khandwa Rail routes.
Road– Ratlam is connected to Indore and Neemuch via National Highway no. 79. This four-lane highway runs from Indore to Chittorgarh to join the Golden Quadrilateral.The city has regular bus services to Udaipur, Banswara, Mandsaur, Nimach, Indore, Bhopal and Bagh.
Ratlam is almost half way point on Mumbai Delhi Highway Ratlam has local city transport in the form of Auto Rickshaws, Tata Magic and coming up city bus.
